Münchausen Syndrome; It is called Factitious Disorder or Münchausen Syndrome when a person creates a disease on his/her own or maintains an existing disease for the purpose of attracting attention from family, environment or health professionals in authority figures.
This name was given in reference to the fact that the heroic stories told by German baron Karl Fredrich von Munchausen after the Russo-Ottoman war in the 18th century were false.

What Is Münchausen Syndrome?
In this disorder, the person’s goal is to play the sick role or pretend to be sick. In line with this goal, the person does not hesitate to hurt himself and feel pain. He deliberately wounds himself, if he has a chronic disease, he makes an effort to increase the symptoms of the disease. He may go to multiple health institutions, try to register under different names, or even play around with test results. He can tell a different disease story to every doctor he goes to.

Although the cause of Münchausen Syndrome is not known exactly, it is thought that conditions such as a long-term health problem experienced in childhood or adolescence, witnessing a health problem of a close person, abandonment, parental neglect are factors.

How To Diagnose Münchausen Syndrome?
It is difficult to diagnose because the person may show false symptoms. Therefore, it is beneficial to monitor it in a clinical setting. In the treatment protocol, psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy should be applied simultaneously.
